LAN

An acronym for Local Area Network, LAN refers to a local network that connects computers located on the same floor or in the same building or nearby buildings.

Leased Line

Refers to a dedicated phone line that is rented for exclusive 24/7 Internet usage from one location to another location. The highest speed data connections require a leased line.

Lighting Programme

The provision of equipment to enable the transmission of large volumes of data down a pair of optical fibres.

Link

A link generally refers to any highlighted words or phrases in a hypertext document that allow you to jump to another section of the same document or to another document on the World Wide Web.

Linux & Apache

Fast, reliable, the most used web server on the Internet, runs CGI & Perl. Disadvantages: does not natively run ASP scrips, does not support ODBC database connections and does not support FrontPage 2000.

Listserv

The heart of an electronic mailing list, Listserv software automatically subscribes and unsubscribes list members and sends copies of every e-mail message to every list subscriber.

Lit Fibre

Fibre optic cable with the necessary equipment to enable transmission of a telecommunication signal over the activated fibre.

Local Loop

The line from a subscriber to the telephone company’s local exchange.

Login Name

A login name is the account name used to access a computer system. Also called user ID or user name, it is a way people identify themselves to their online service or Internet access provider.
