Rack Size

The standard size for each server is 19" or 4U. A complete rack is 42U.

RAID

An acronym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives, RAID is a manipulation of disk technology that allows the user to combine several hard drives for use as one. The benefits can be either speed increase or failsafe (so that if one drive fails the system carries on using the mirrored drive).

RAID 1

Disk mirroring involves two hard drives. The same data is written to both drives during operation. This provides a high level of redundancy; if one drive fails the system carries on using he mirrored drive.

RAID 5

A RAID 5 configuration utilises three or more hard drives and stripes the data across them. The difference is that parity information is striped across the drives as well, so if you lose any one drive, the information can be reconstructed from the parity information.

Router

A router is a piece of hardware or software that connects two or more networks. A router functions as a sorter and interpreter as it looks at addresses and passes bits of information to their proper destinations. Software routers are sometimes referred to as gateways.

RPM

Stands for revs per minute. Simply means the speed that the disk inside the Hard Disk Drive spins. The faster the disk spins, the quicker data can be accessed.
